Nestled in the little town of Rose Hill, located in eastern North Carolina there’s an abundance of wineries, but one of my all time favorites is Duplin Winery. Duplin Winery specializes in sweet wines, but for those who may prefer dryer wines they most certainly have those too!
History of Duplin Winery in Rose Hill
Duplin Winery was created by Dan and David Fussell Sr. who were first generation grape farmers in the early 1970’s. Shortly after their first harvest of grapes they found that the grape prices had dropped drastically. At that time there were no wineries in North Carolina so most grape farmers sold their grapes in neighboring states. When the market for grapes dropped Dan and David Fussell realized they needed to find a way to use their grapes and make a profit that would be more than the market price. Wine was the answer! Duplin Winery or what was originally Duplin Wine Cellars Inc. sold it’s first wine bottled in mason jars in 1976.
These days Duplin Winery not only has a wide variety of sweet and dry wines, but also many products made using their wines. The original winery located in Rose Hill, NC has added a bistro and boutique along with multiple tasting rooms. They also boast a winery in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Wine Tasting
Andrew and I absolutely love the wine tastings at Duplin Winery. For $15 you can try ten of their wines. The wines for their wine tastings change seasonly so every time you visit there will be new wines to try.
The wine tasting happens in one of their wine tasting bars. You will receive a pamphlet with your wine tasting list and score card along with their house made crackers and special muscadine dip that is to die for! You will be educated on how to taste the wines, how to clear your palette and then with each wine you will get an exclusive history of the wine you are tasting. It’s extremely informative and the highlight of our Duplin Winery dates. Along with your wine tasting you will receive a glass of your favorite wine.
I do want to note that your glass of wine from your tasting doesn’t have to be one that you’ve tasted. I tend to get a wine slushie and Andrew loves the Queen Anne’s Revenge, both of which are rarely on the list for the wine tastings.
The Bistro at Duplin Winery
Once we finish our wine tasting and have our glass of wine we tend to be a little buzzed. This is why we always plan to visit the Bistro after our wine tasting.
At the Bistro they have many amazing things to eat. From chicken to steak, burgers to wraps, you can have a fancy dinner or a casual lunch. We also highly suggest you get dessert! We LOVE their cheesecake!
The Wines
Duplin Winery has created wines that cover the white, red and blush categories. They make their wines with mostly Muscadine Grapes, but a few of their wines use the native Scuppernong Grapes.
Some of their red wines which we enjoy are the Sangria Red (Citrusy, Strawberry), the Sweet Poppy (Sprightly, Crisp), and our absolute favorite the Queen Anne’s Revenge (Complex, Full Bodied).
A few of their white wines that we enjoy are the Midnight Magnolia (Sweet, Elegant Fruit), the Sweet Lily (Lively, Crisp, Fruity), and the Sangria White (Citrusy, Peach, Mango).
I do believe I’m a blush girl at heart! My favorites are the Goin’ Coastal Vintage (Retro, Sweet), Bald Head Red (Slightly Sweet, Floral) and Pink Magnolia (Medium, Sweet, Fruity).
